Betsy DeVos; The Great Education Philanthropist

Betsy DeVos is an American entrepreneur, philanthropist and the present Secretary of Education in the United States. Mrs. DeVos is wife to the former CEO of Amway, Dick DeVos. Betsy and Dick DeVos are famous for their charitable nature and support for the Republican Party. In1989, Betsy and Dick co-founded the Dick and Betsy Family Foundation based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. broadcasts that the two gave out approximately $11.6 million to charity in 2015. Additionally, in the same year, the DeVoses doled out $104 million which placed them in the 2015 Forbes list of America Top Givers. According to Forbes, the DeVos family has donated over $1.3 billion to several charities in their entire lifetime.


Looking at the breakdown of charities that Betsy had been involved in one will notice that education takes the more substantial chunk. This is because Betsy is a passionate and a firm believer in school choice. In the end, she would like parents to have the control of selecting the best schools for their kids whether public, private or charter without being restricted to their Zip codes.


Betsy DeVos advocates for school vouchers candidly and has partnered with the public school education reform to expand charter schools. For example, Betsy was on the frontline in the development of Detroit’s charter school system. Additionally, Betsy is known for her active participation in several educational reforms and has set up different political action committee in support of such agendas


Some of the schools supported by Betsy Foundation include the West Michigan Aviation Academy, an aviation-themed charter high school based in Grand Rapids, and two other private Christian schools. To add to that, the Foundation has the Education Freedom Fund through which it actively offers scholarships to less privileged children to assist them to get an education at private schools.


Other than education, Betsy DeVos also takes part in other charitable ventures such hospitals, churches, art, health research and conservative, free-market think tanks. For instance, she supports the pediatric oncology based at the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, an institution named after Helen DeVos who is Betsy’s mother-in-law.

Betsy DeVos was born to a conservative family situated in Holland, Michigan. Mrs. DeVos did her high school studies at Holland Christian High School after which she enrolled at the Calvin College where she attained her Bachelors of Arts Degree.


Betsy DeVos has served on the board of several organizations including being the chairperson of the committee of Alliance for School Choice, Action Institute, and was the leader in ALL Children Matter PAC. Furthermore, she is a board member at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and formerly the Chair of the Philanthropy Roundtable, an association of private philanthropists and non-profits business people.
